A calligraphic performance bringing together sound, sensation, and projection

The Brush Guiding the Way is a performance that shows the sensitivity and dynamism of calligraphy, a traditional artform of Japan. In this performance, I write out the kanji, Chinese characters, of the words for horse, monkey, and crane, all animals that have symbolic meaning in Japanese culture, and I place them on backdrops that show the seasonality and beauty of Japan landscapes. By combining these traditional artforms with the dynamism of live projection, I aim to boldly show the synthesis of past and future and the development of Japanese culture.

The Background

The grasses and blue skies of spring and summer

The red maple leaves of autumn

The icy snow and evergreen trees of winter
