My Internship Experience at Kanaya Resort Hakone

I recently completed an enriching internship at Kanaya Resort Hakone. It is part of the Kanaya Hotel Kanko Group, which traces its roots back to 1931 with the founding of the Kinugawa Onsen Hotel. It was a privilege to be the first intern at this distinguished establishment. I am deeply grateful to the owner and all the staff members for this invaluable opportunity.

During my internship, I gained hands-on experience in all facets of the hospitality industry—from serving and cooking to preparing rooms and greeting guests. This experience not only strengthened my understanding of Japanese hospitality but also allowed me to immerse myself in the rich cultural and historical legacy of this hotel and its related institutions.

About Kanaya Resort Hakone
Kanaya Resort Hakone seemlessly blends Western architectural styles with traditional Japanese elements. This unique fusion creates a welcoming and nostalgic atmosphere that has been appreciated by many distinguished guests over the years, giving it a reputation of historical and cultural significance.

Throughout my time at Kanaya Resort Hakone, I had the privilege of collaborating closely with the staff, participating in both front-of-house and back-of-house operations, and observing the careful planning and coordination essential for maintaining the hotel's high standards of service.

It was particulary rewarding to get tangible experience in engaging with the guests, as I was able to hear their direct feedback and praise for the service that the hotel provides, as well as my performance.

OMOTENASHI

For me, Japanese hospitality, or omotenashi, is more than just providing excellent service; it's about anticipating guests' needs, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and delivering genuine care and attention to every detail.

I immersed myself in the art of traditional Japanese hospitality, learning the importance of respect, mindfulness, and meticulous preparation in every aspect of guest service. By doing everything from folding bedsheets to handling calls at the front desk, this experience deepened my appreciation for the cultural values behind Japanese hospitality and solidified my goal of becoming a professional in the hospitality industry.

Reflection

I initially thought that hotel work would be divided among specialists, but I was amazed to see that the staff at Kanaya Resort Hakone were all multi-talented, handling various roles with exceptional skill. The level of expertise and teamwork was truly impressive, and I realized that this is made possible by the leadership of the general manager and the staff’s shared understanding of his vision. It’s this synergy that allows guests to fully experience the unique atmosphere and service of Kanaya Resort Hakone…

My Goal

Through this experience, I have gained a deep understanding of the role of a hotelier, and it has become one of my career aspirations. I will never forget how the staff treated me not just as an intern, but as an equal, respecting me as an individual.

This is something I will cherish forever, and it has inspired me to further pursue a career in hospitality, where I hope to contribute to creating memorable experiences for guests from around the world.
